EZYTRAIL CAMPER TRAILERS ANSWERS YOUR MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Question: BRAKES.

Hydraulic, mechanical & electric. Each has their own merits, but in an off road situation trailer brakes controlled from an electric controller within the drivers reach is a very handy item, especially on a downhill trail. Do I really need brakes? How do I adjust the shoes? What is the correct adjustment? Has it got a handbrake?

Answer:

It is law in Australia that any trailer over 750kg ATM must be fitted with brakes, this may be mechanical, hydraulic or electric.

Mechanical brakes are an active braking system whereby the momentum of the trailer pushes against a piston fitted to the towbar hitch which then activates the brakes via a cable.

Electric brakes are a passive system which uses a brake controller fitted to your tow vehicle that sends a variable electric signal directly to the brakes, the voltage from this signal is based on the pressure applied to your brake pedal thus engaging the trailer brakes, in most cases this happens before your vehicle braking system has engaged allowing your trailer to start to pull up before your tow vehicle does.

Hydraulic brakes can be active or passive, in a situation where they are active it is done using the same method as mechanical brakes however a master cylinder is used to push hydraulic fluid rather than cables, in a passive situation a brake controller is used to activate the hydraulic brakes much in the same way as electric brakes.

All Ezytrail hard floor, semi off road and off road camper trailers over 750Kg ATM come fitted with electric brakes and a hand brake for parking. And can be adjusted by a qualified auto mechanic.
